Hello! Welcome to my career portfolio, my name is Tiffani Reardon. Over the few years I have been in academia, I have been truly immersed into a world of online learning, particularly in the higher education setting, and I am eager to continue my journey. In this portfolio, you'll find a few of the things I've accomplished in the last few years and some information about how I approach online education.
As an instructor, my educational philosophy revolves around the student, the learner, and/or the participant. While others might include "learner-centered" or "learner-driven" as a single component in their philosophy, that is my philosophy. Specifically, I believe that education should have specific components of a learner-centered approach:
Goal-oriented: education should have a thoughtful and clear-to-the-learner purpose. The best way to do this is through clear and measurable goals and objectives that are made available and explained to the learner.
Engaging: education should engage the learner in such a way that not only grabs the learner's attention, but also motivates them to continue. This can be done in various ways including with gamification, interactive activities, or learner-driven activities.
Accessible: education should be accessible to all. In an in-person class, this might mean interpreters, braille, or service animals. In an online class, it means web accessibility elements like captioned videos, screen-reader friendly documents, and contrasting colors.
Affordable: education should be affordable to all. This might mean having inexpensive alternatives to required materials like Open Office for Microsoft Office, open educational resources for textbooks, or laptop check-out options for students without computers at home.
